Mission Statement

The Maryland Research and Education Network (MDREN) will provide reliable, high-speed and advanced networking services to education, research and community anchor institutions throughout the State of Maryland. MDREN will engage its membership to promote education, collaboration and research to support their missions. The organization will leverage the diverse and cumulative wisdom of its membership to provide thought leadership on, and promote, network-enabled capabilities that support our community. Leveraging partnerships and strategic opportunities, MDREN will evolve to remain relevant and respond to the changing needs of our members.

The Maryland Research and Education Network (MDREN) provides advanced network services to institutions throughout the State of Maryland and connections to regional and national resources.

MDREN consists of a network that connects University System of Maryland members, other Maryland state universities, community colleges, and private institutions to each other, the Internet, and Internet2.

Oversight and governance is provided by the MDREN Board, as well as the ExecutiveFinance, and Membership and Services Committees.  The Board is composed of a representative from each of the USM institutions and representatives from each of the educational segments.  For more information on MDREN please contact us.

MDREN was established in 2011, superseding The University of Maryland Academic Telecommunications System (UMATS).

MDREN provides a data network and a growing list of cutting-edge services, including:

  • Internet, National Research Network and Internet2
  • Broadband Services
  • Wireless Services
  • Research/STEM related Services
  • Cybersecurity Services
  • Collaboration Services

This network of services connects the University System of Maryland members, other Maryland public and private state universities, community colleges, and K12 LEA institutions into a community of shared interests and projects.

MDREN is co-located with other USM organizations in the Elkins Building at 3300 Metzerott Road, Adelphi, Maryland. MDREN also has presence and equipment located at almost a dozen sites across the state.
